CARDIOLOGY TECHNOLOGY DIPLOMA

As a Cardiology Technologist, you will assist physicians by using various procedures and equipment to monitor, diagnose and treat cardiac arrhythmias, heart, and blood vessel disorders. Detecting heart disease and other cardiac pathologies involves a team of healthcare professionals, of which the Cardiology Technologist is a key player. You are expected to be dependable, empathetic, a good communicator and be able to think critically on the spot. These qualities will put patients at ease and allow you, as the Cardiology Technologist, to accomplish the task as efficiently and effectively as possible.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The program is 76 weeks, including a 16-week hands-on practicum training with potential employers at clinics and hospitals. This program will provide you with the fundamental theoretical knowledge and skills needed to be successful. Expect to learn and acquire knowledge and skills from industry experts, who will bring their real-life exposure and experience to the classroom setting. Whether new to Canada and looking to expand your experience, trained in healthcare, and wanting to specialize, or new to the field and fascinated by where this diploma can take your future, this program is second-to-none.

Requirements

For our Cardiology Technology Diploma program, we select candidates who demonstrate the potential to become Canada’s future health care leaders. Every application is considered on its own merit.

  • Have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent with senior level College (C) University (U) level courses: English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or Biology (preferred) OR
  • Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diploma OR
  • Completion of a minimum of two Anderson College premed courses
  • Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English by one of the following methods:
    • A Grade 11 or 12 University Stream English credit (or equivalent) with at least four recent years of full-time study in an educational institution where the language of instruction and of examinations was English and which was located in a country where the first language is English OR
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test with a minimum score of 83 for the Internet-based test (iBT) (20 writing, 20 speaking, 19 reading and 24 listening) OR
    • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic minimum test score of writing 6.0, Speaking 6.5, Listening 7.5 and Reading 6.5 OR
    • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test with a score of 70 in writing, reading and speaking and a score of 80 in listening, with test results within the last two years OR
    • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) with a minimum score of 60, with test results within the last two years OR
    • Equivalent English testing from a comparable organization
  • Profession-Specific Aptitude Test. Applicants will be assessed on their capacity to understand and follow directions. The assessment may include: questions related to, reading comprehension, math, science, career awareness, and reasoning-type questions, or scenarios related to interpersonal interactions.
  • Completed CASPer Test. All applicants must complete the CASPer test. CASPer is an online test which assesses for noncognitive skills and interpersonal characteristics that are important for successful students and graduates of this healthcare program. In implementing CASPer, we are trying to further enhance fairness and objectivity in our admission selection process.
  • Immunization Report within 30 days of start date, Police Check with VSS within 30 days of start date.

Note that this is the minimum requirement and meeting the same does not guarantee admission to the program.

NON-ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

To participate in the clinical education portion of the Cardiology Technology program, the applicant must possess additional non-academic skills. These technical standards are consistent with the duties of an entry-level Cardiology Technologist in a professional position. The applicant must have the ability to:

  • Lift up to 50 pounds of weight
  • Carry, push, and pull up to 20 pounds of weight
  • Lift and transfer patients to and from wheelchairs, stretchers and beds
  • Move, adjust, and manipulate equipment to perform testing in different environments
  • Coach patients before, during, and after procedure
  • Mental and physical agility to deal with patients and equipment
  • Ability to recognize and respond to verbal and non-verbal communication
  • Establish and maintain visual, mental, and hearing acuity
  • Fluent communication in English
  • Ability to apply critical thinking and common sense

LIMITED ENROLMENTS

Please note that possession of the prerequisite course requirements does not guarantee admission. If the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of places available in the program, the College reserves the right to select from among those applicants. All qualified students will be given equal consideration.

Anderson College offers reserved seats for Indigenous, rural and northern Ontario students. Only applicants who self-identify as First Nation, Métis, or Inuit or those with a home address (living) in rural and northern Ontario regions will be eligible for these seats. The same selection process will apply to the above noted applicants. If the seats are not filled by a specified date, they will be offered to waitlisted applicants.

CLINICAL PRACTICUM REQUIREMENTS

Successful candidates will be informed of the allocation of their practicum placement by the program chair. There is no guarantee that students will be placed at their desired practicum location. Special considerations of personal circumstances will not be given in regard to assigning practicum placements. Students will be responsible for fees associated with practicum such as entrance requirements, relocation and travel costs.

In compliance with the practicum agreements with our clinical partners, successful candidates will be requested to provide proof of the following requirements:

  • Proof of completion of immunization requirements (immunization form)
  • A clear vulnerable police sector record
  • To qualify for practicum, students must also complete
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level BLS*,
  • Mask Fit testing (N-95) and have successfully passed all program courses/modules.
  • Fully COVID-19 Vaccination (2) shots

* This will be arranged by the College during the program.
