Overview

The Doctoral Programme in Business and Technology Management provides students with excellent research skills, broad expertise in industrial engineering and management, and an in-depth understanding of information and knowledge management. Our students develop technological and business expertise that allows them to create new scientific knowledge and address societally significant challenges that require in-depth analysis. The programme is intended for applicants who hold a master’s degree in technology, economics or an applicable field. In addition to graduates from the Master’s Degree Programme in Industrial Engineering and Management and the Master’s Degree Programme in Information and Knowledge Management, the Doctoral Programme in Business and Technology Management attracts graduates with a degree in, for example, technology, business or economics.

We are seeking doctoral students with the potential to offer new research insights, contribute to the generation of new knowledge, address the challenges facing our society, and apply their knowledge in the different fields of technology and administration. After completing the programme, our graduates are awarded the degree of Doctor of Science in Technology (or Doctor of Philosophy) and typically move into leadership roles in industry, research and teaching positions in universities or universities of applied sciences, or research and management positions in research institutions. Extensive career opportunities are also available for our graduates in industry and public administration.

Requirements

General eligibility for scientific doctoral studies is stipulated in the University Act (2009/558, Paragraph 37). The university can admit to a doctoral programme an applicant who has completed

  • an applicable master’s degree;
  • an applicable master’s degree at a university of applied sciences; or
  • an applicable foreign degree, which in the awarding country makes you eligible to pursue an equivalent university degree

The scope of a foreign degree must be equivalent to a Finnish degree (generally in a University 180 + 120 ECTS, or approx. 3 + 2 years) that confers eligibility for admission to a doctoral programme. Foreign degrees must include a thesis-type final project.

Tampere University may require a person admitted to a doctoral programme to complete a set of courses to further expand his or her knowledge and skills. The maximum scope of these supplementary studies is 60 credits. Students applying with a master’s degree completed in a university of applied sciences in Finland need to include the possible supplementary studies in their personal study plan drafted with the with the possible responsible supervisor.

As a rule, the Doctoral Programme in Business and Technology Management requires applicants who have completed a master’s degree at a university of applied sciences or an equivalent degree obtained abroad to complete 60 credits of supplementary studies. These studies need to be completed in parallel with the doctoral studies at the beginning of the doctoral studies. Supplementary studies are not included in the doctoral degree.
