The Doctoral Programme in Engineering Sciences has strong industrial relevance. Our graduates have the ability to refine industrial challenges into scientific research questions and apply scientific methods to create new knowledge. Upon completion of the Doctor of Science in Technology degree, our doctoral graduates will have the expertise to pursue challenging careers in the field of engineering sciences. The doctoral programme covers the following research fields: Automation Science and Engineering, Mechanical and Production Engineering, and Materials Science and Engineering. The programme is closely focused on technology and offers doctoral students access to state-of-the-art research environments.

Our doctoral graduates possess the competencies to effectively collaborate with industrial or academic experts and communities. Our graduates are able to critically evaluate and analyse data to answer research questions, communicate their results, and generate new knowledge. Requirements
General eligibility for scientific doctoral studies is stipulated in the University Act (2009/558, Paragraph 37). The university can admit to a doctoral programme an applicant who has completed
an applicable master’s degree;
an applicable master’s degree at a university of applied sciences; or
an applicable foreign degree, which in the awarding country makes you eligible to pursue an equivalent university degree
The scope of a foreign degree must be equivalent to a Finnish degree (generally 180 + 120 ECTS, or approx. 3 + 2 years) that confers eligibility for admission to a doctoral programme. Foreign degrees must include a thesis-type final project.
Tampere University may require a person admitted to a doctoral programme to complete a set of courses to further expand their knowledge and skills. The maximum scope of these supplementary studies is 60 credits. Students applying with a master’s degree completed in a university of applied sciences in Finland need to include the possible supplementary studies in their personal study plan drafted with the with the possible supervisor.

Language Requirements
Applicants must meet the language requirements in either Finnish or English. The requirements for English language proficiency are stated below. For requirements in Finnish language proficiency, please see the admissions criteria in Finnish.
Applicants must submit evidence on a good command of English for academic purposes. There are two ways of indicating English language proficiency: language tests and previous studies.

Exemptions to the language requirements
It is possible to be exempted from submitting a language test score if you have completed a higher education degree in English in certain countries. If you apply without a valid language test result, carefully examine the exemptions that your studies fulfil the requirements.
Faculty-specific exemptions to the language requirements (Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, ENS)
The faculty may consider the applicant to be exempted from the language test result if:
applicant has already enrolled at some university in Finland as an exchange student, or
applicant has experience in speaking and writing in English during research work, or
applicant has demonstrated the English proficiency by other credible means approved by the Dean.
Admissions criteria
Students accepted in the doctoral programme usually complete the degree of DSc in Technology. In order to gain support for the doctoral study application, the candidate should have sufficient basic knowledge of the field of research specified in the application. In other cases special circumstances may be taken into account. In addition to the above, the suitability of doctoral study applicants is assessed on the basis of the following criteria:
the scientific level, relevance and feasibility of your research plan and study plan
the applicability of your existing qualifications, previously completed studies and proposed research topic
your previous academic performance
your existing knowledge and skills and the language skills required for completing the degree
your level of motivation and previous experience
the availability of competent supervision
the availability of the required research infrastructure as well as your funding plan.
The availability of doctoral student supervision resources in the programme is taken into account when considering the granting of study rights and it is essential to enclose a supporting letter from TAU supervisor into the application.
