Overview

Come to change the world as an educationalist!

Be part of the Doctoral Programme of Education and Society to help create an ethically, socially, and ecologically sustainable future for education.

Education advances with a rapidly changing world and plays a key role in shaping the future. Experts in this field require environments that foster and support innovative and sustainable progress. As a researcher in education, you will actively shape practices, policies, and values that influence tomorrow’s societies.

Aiming for a strong multifaceted expertise in education

“Through this programme, doctoral researchers develop the skills and vision needed to address complex educational challenges, shaping a more inclusive, ethical, and sustainable future for society.”
— Head of Doctoral Programme

Education and training are inherently intertwined with complex and multifaceted social phenomena. To address this, the faculty’s research groups examine educational issues through diverse perspectives, incorporating elements from sociology, philosophy, psychology, technology, learning sciences, and the arts. The faculty also employs a rich array of methodological approaches and fosters extensive collaboration both within academia and beyond, providing opportunities to engage in interdisciplinary projects with significant societal impact.

The research conducted in the aculty’s research groups is organised into three thematic areas, which also serve as the core focus areas of the doctoral programme:

1.Education in Society

2.Communities in Education

3.Learning, Pedagogy, and Learning Cultures

Our doctoral curriculum builds on the following principles:

  1. Connection with the Faculty’s Research Focus Areas: Studies are linked to the Faculty of Education and Culture’s key research themes.
  2. Community Building and Support: A collaborative environment is fostered among doctoral researchers, supervisors, and faculty to encourage reciprocal support, knowledge sharing, and a sense of community.
  3. Comprehensive Supervision and Support: A structured yet supportive supervision system, including high-quality guidance and regular follow-up, ensures researchers have access to necessary academic and practical resources.
  4. Clear and Predictable Pathway Through Studies: The curriculum is structured to facilitate timely degree completion within four years (full-time studying), with progress regularly monitored against the established learning outcomes.

Join our supportive community!

“Here, the successful doctoral path is about feeling fully included in the scientific community.”
— Doctoral Researcher

We consider our doctoral researchers as colleagues whose expertise and participation in the community is invaluable. They also form an active peer community where the challenges of a researcher’s career are faced together.

Our doctoral researchers are offered a wide range of activities that support their research. For example, doctoral researchers regularly organise meetings and workshops on topical issues and provide methodological support for the different stages of writing a doctoral dissertation. In our research culture of care, we are committed to openness and knowledge sharing. We also support our doctoral researchers to apply for funding.

Change the world!

“The programme opens up the possibility to look into what education can do to improve the society, and vice versa, how society/societal processes influence educational processes.”
— Doctoral Researcher

Doctoral education in our programme prepares to plan and execute projects in an ethical manner by exploring complex processes as manageable steps. The ability to set goals, plan, organise, and prioritise activities in multifaceted educational settings in a socially sustainable way is one core aspect of expertise we foster in our programme.

Graduates from the doctoral programme are qualified to work in national and international education roles at various levels, in human resources, as policy advisors in the public sector, and in many other positions requiring complex, innovative, and human-centered expertise.

Career opportunities are available in both the business and public sectors. For example, graduates may work as educational consultants, curriculum developers, researchers in education, senior advisors in ministries of education, leaders in educational institutions, or training specialists in corporate learning and development departments.

In the programme, we embrace the close relationship between theory and practice as a strength of educational research and strive for research skills that enable strong and profound scientific and societal impact.

Welcome to change the world with us!
