What Is The Gateway Program At St. Matthew’s?
The Gateway Medical Program is a 15-week preclinical and clinical sciences program offered online or on-campus to students who have been granted conditional acceptance to St. Matthew’s University School of Medicine (SMUSOM). The on-campus option is offered on Nevis at our sister school Medical University of the Americas.
Gateway is offered three times per year, beginning in January, May, and September. Upon completing Gateway, students join the next entering SMUSOM medical school class.
Gateway Program graduates may qualify for the full range of academic scholarships offered by SMUSOM’s MD Program based on their combined GPA across both the Gateway Program and their undergraduate study or their MCAT score, whichever affords the higher scholarship payout.
Students may attend Gateway part-time, and online students may attend asynchronously.

Tuition “Free” Guarantee
The Gateway Grant is exclusively available to students who enrolled in the 2024 and 2025 terms and subsequent cohorts of the Gateway Program. Eligible Gateway students will be awarded a one-time grant of $2,500 USD to be applied toward their Gateway tuition fees. While students will benefit from this grant, they will continue to pay the administrative cost of $2,500 USD associated with the course.

Required Courses
Are you missing most or all of our recommended courses? Then please consider our 8-month online Pre-medical Master’s Program, which awards an MSc in Biological Science. Students who successfully complete the program earn automatic admission to SMUSOM’s MD program.
Standardized Examination (MCAT)
The Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) is required for all applicants who are U.S. citizens, nationals or permanent residents of the United States. More information about the MCAT is available at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).
English Proficiency
Since English is the language of instruction at SMUSOM, it is important that applicants be prepared academically to pursue the curriculum and be able to communicate effectively.
Applicants whose principal language is not English may be required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
Transfer Students
St. Matthew’s University School of Medicine welcomes applications from eligible transfer students who have attended medical schools recognized in the World Directory of Medical Schools. Acceptance of transfer credits is at the discretion of the university.
Technical Standards
A candidate for the degree of Doctor of Medicine must have abilities and skills in the five broad areas of observation: communication, motor function, intellectual-conceptual, and behavioral and social skills.
