Undergraduate law studies must respond both to the – very important and also complex – societal role of lawyers and the high demands of those bodies in Cyprus and abroad which are competent to grant and recognize professional rights to law graduates.
The program of study in law at the University of Cyprus aims at providing full and comprehensive education to the future lawyers, familiarising them with the practical and ethical problems which arise, and providing them the required knowledge and methodology.
The University of Cyprus undergraduate program of study in law is one of the most demanding in Cyprus, with thirty-four (34) law courses, with a total weight of 210 ECTS credits, as well as additional courses of other departments specially designed for the needs of law students.
The program is composed of twenty-five (25) compulsory legal courses, with a total weight of 156 ECTS credits, covering the core subjects of law in all disciplines.
The first year consists of largely introductory law modules, while the most demanding modules are taught during the second, third and fourth years. The legal training of the students is supplemented by a selection of elective courses of the Department (optional specialisation courses) (9 or 7 depending on whether the student will choose to write a thesis). Students meeting certain criteria may opt to write a diploma/graduation thesis of 10,000-13,000 words, which corresponds to 12 ECTS and spans over two semesters.
The development of students’ writing and research skills, with written exercises and assignments, is an important element in both core and specialized courses.
The excellent knowledge of foreign languages, especially English, but also a basic understanding of social, economic and humanities sciences are of vital importance for the modern European lawyer. For this reason and according to the rules of the University, the program of studies is supplemented by modules in two foreign languages and three elective courses from other Departments within the University. In addition, students are encouraged to take part, under the supervision of academics, in international student competitions (moot courts, Model United Nations etc) and student forums, as well the Erasmus student exchange program (the Department has a significant number of agreements (34) with distinguished European Universities). Within this framework, every year several visiting academics from European Universities with which the Department has signed an Erasmus agreement, give guest lectures in English to the students of the Department. In addition, according to the existing legal framework, the Department now offers at least two elective courses per semester in English, both for the Erasmus students and for the students of the Department.
As far as the student assessment is concerned, based on the rules of the University, there are at least two evaluations per course. The grade of the final exam corresponds up to 60% of the student’s final grade, while the remainder is covered by the student’s grade in the mid-term exam (which may be a written exam or coursework or a combination) and/or the student’s (active) participation in classes.
As to the written assignments, the Department uses plagiarism detection systems and follows the relevant policy of the University. See also “Plagiarism in Study: Detection and Avoidance” (http://library.ucy.ac.cy/per-page-files/services/references/plagiarism/plagiarism_25112017.pdf).
