Medical Office Administrator

Overview

As a skilled Medical Office Administrator, you perform a variety of administrative duties in doctor’s offices, hospitals, laboratories, clinics and other medical settings. You are the first person to greet patients and staff upon entering the clinic, and the atmosphere of your work environment is enhanced by your friendly and welcoming attitude and excellent communication skills.

Some of your responsibilities include, being the foundation of communication within the office; planning and scheduling appointments; organizing and maintaining documents and files; managing projects; conducting research; and, providing information by use of telephone, email, and postal service. You may be required to transcribe dictation and assist physicians or medical staff with reports and conference proceedings. You may also need to be familiar with insurance rules, billing practices, and hospital or laboratory procedures according to their province.

Anderson College of Health, Business and Technology Medical Office Administrator program is accredited with the Canadian College of Health Information Management (CCHIM). This program meets the quality and educational program standards set out for the Health Information-Certified Associate (HICA) certification.  Graduates of the Medical Office Administrator– Health Services program are eligible to write the National Certification Exam (NCE) and can begin their career as a certified health information professional.***

WHAT TO EXPECT

The program is 48 weeks, including an 8-week practicum with on-the-job training, offsite with potential employers. It provides you with the specific skills necessary to effectively manage office procedures and operate a medical office environment.

The program covers a wide variety of theoretical concepts, including health administrative team roles and responsibilities; the study of basic human anatomy and medical terminology; document formatting and business correspondence; computer fundamentals; and, patient care and communication, etc. In addition, through hands-on training you gain the practical experience to perform computer, communications, and organizational skills with ease, leading to job success.

Requirements

Academic Requirements 

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, Or
    • 18 years of age or older on or before the program commences AND pass a qualifying test that has been approved by the Superintendent (Wonderlic SLE with a minimum score of 18), or
    • Other academic qualifications or minimum age requirements established as a condition or the Superintendent’s approval of the program, and
    • Any additional admission requirements established by the private career college for the program and as approved by the Superintendent.

  • Medical immunizations
  • Police check
Practicum Requirements
Successful candidates will be informed of the allocation of their practicum placement by the program. There are no guarantee students will be placed at their desired practicum location. Special considerations of personal circumstances will not be given in regard to assigning practicum placements. Students will be responsible for fees associated with practicum such as relocation and travel costs. In compliance with the practical agreements with our clinical partners, successful candidates will be requested to provide proof of the following requirements:
  • Completion of all academic courses
  • Completion of a First-Aid/CPR certificate
  • Clear non-vulnerable sector police check
  • Note: Health forms are not mandatory. They will have to be completed upon request from the practicum site
