Orthopaedic Technician

Overview

As an orthopaedic technician, you will work directly with orthopaedic surgeons and apply, adjust, and remove casts, splints and traction equipment utilized in the care of orthopaedic patients. In addition, you will observe, monitor, report, and document changes in the patient’s physical, mental and emotional state, while providing safe, effective and quality care and support. In your position, it is essential that you have strong organizational and time management skills, the ability to work as a cohesive team member and independently, in a fast-paced environment. You have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a passion for caring for patients.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE ORTHOPAEDIC TECHNICIAN PROGRAM?

This program is 47 weeks, including 330 hours of practicum with on-the-job training, offsite with potential employers. Our Orthopaedic Technician Diploma program covers areas such as: the fundamentals of orthopaedic care, fractures, treatments and rehabilitation, splinting, casting, wound care, medical terminology, how to use orthopaedic equipment and appliances, and interpersonal skills and patient care. It provides a balance between theoretical instruction and hands-on training in our state-of-the-art laboratory. During your clinical labs, you will learn how to cast and splint, gain an understanding of how to operate and adjust traction equipment, crutches, walkers, and other aides.
