The Ph.D. Programme of the Department of Law runs parallel to the postgraduate programme of Law on a master’s level.
The Department of Law offers a high quality postgraduate and doctoral program that meets the international criteria of scientific excellence and is adapted to the needs of the legal world of Cyprus.
The aims of the doctoral program are:
the provision of higher level legal studies
the cultivation of legal science, research and critical thought
the systematic contribution to the development of Cypriot law
the promotion of academic research of high scientific standards that will enrich science in Cyprus and abroad
the production of quality research with theoretical orientation and jurisprudential background in the field of Cypriot law and of the wider legal science
specialization in key disciplines and fields of legal science
the cultivation of comparative and theoretical methodology that focuses on the study of the legal-political dimensions and the development of Cypriot law in a comparative, historical, theoretical, international and European context.
The program thus utilizes the research experience of the academic staff of the Department.

The University of Cyprus invites applications to join the PhD program of the Department of law, with a start date in September 2024.
The Department announces fourteen (14) positions for the postgraduate programme leading to a PhD degree, distributed as follows:
Two (2) under the supervision of Professor Nikitas Hatzimihail
Two (2) under the supervision of Associate Professor Aristoteles Constantinides
One (1) under the supervision of Associate Professor Charalambos Papacharalambous
Two (2) under the supervision of Associate Professor Costas Paraskeva
One (1) under the supervision of Assistant Professor Thomas Papadopoulos
Two (2) under the supervision of Assistant Professor Michael Chatzipanagiotis
Two (2) under the supervision of Assistant Professor Alina Tryfonidou
One (1) under the supervision of Professor Tatiana Synodinou

The first stage in the application process: Applicants are strongly encouraged to check the research interests and expertise of the academic staff of the Department of Law and must get in touch with potential Research Supervisors before submitting their application. Written endorsement by a supervisor at this preliminary stage is required for the progression of the application to the next stage. It is noted that endorsement does not equal success for the application but is rather a precondition for its progression to the next stage of assessment.

The second stage in the application process: The applicant complies with all the requirements set onthe online application system of the University of Cyprus. Applications must be submitted through the systemby Friday, 10 May 2024 at 12 noon. Applications submitted in hard copy will not be accepted.
The following should be included in the online application:
Curriculum vitae.
Certified copies of University Degrees (undergraduate and postgraduate levels) or a Certificate of Graduation. (In case of admission to the program, certified copies of diplomas must be submitted at the latest when accepting the post).
Academic Transcript (with a detailed record of grades) of the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Degrees.
Preliminary (non-binding) research proposal of up to 2000 words in Greek or English, identifying the proposed supervisor and briefly describing the proposed subject, the proposed research methodology and the basic bibliography.
At least one and no more than three written samples of academic writing.
Evidence of excellent knowledge of the English language and any knowledge of other languages.
The names and e-mail addresses of two (2) academic referees. The academic referees will receive a relevant email requesting submission of the reference letterthrough the online application system. The Department may request additional confidential information from the referees.
When submitting the application, the potential supervisor that has previously endorsed the specific application must be named in the accompanying proposal. The final decision for the admission to the PhD Programme in Law will be taken by the Department’s Committee of Postgraduate Studies, upon a favourable recommendation of the nominated Research Supervisor and subject to: (a) restrictions in available positions per supervisor; (b) the fit of the proposal with the research interests and current priorities of the supervisor; (c) the assessment of the qualifications of applicants v is-à-vis the admission criteria. The Department’s Committee of Postgraduate Studies reserves the right to invite applicants to an interview or/and a written examination.
The candidates for the PhD Programme in Law must hold an undergraduate and postgraduate degree in Law by a recognised University.
It is noted that the excellent knowledge of the English language is an additional mandatory admission requirement. Very good knowledge of a second or third European language may be taken into account. The language of instruction is Greek.
