Key Learning Outcomes
Students will demonstrate familiarity with the general literature in three of the key subfields of Sociology (Classical Sociological Theories, Contemporary Sociological Theories, Methodology of Social Research) by succeeding in the comprehensive exam.
Students will familiarise themselves with the specialised theoretical and empirical literature in their specific research field.
Students will develop specific research questions.
Students will master the necessary research methods and then apply them to answer their specific research questions.
Students will be prepared to carry out independent research through substantive guidance.
Students will write a PhD thesis that contributes to international scientific knowledge (both theoretical and empirical) in that specific topic.

SELECTION CRITERIA
Candidates should hold a Masters degree in Sociology or associated disciplines from an accredited University.
Good knowledge of English is a prerequisite. Knowledge of a second European language will be considered an additional qualification.
An academic member of staff should agree to act as your supervisor should your application be successful. You should identify a potential supervisor and contact them to discuss your research proposal before you apply.
Academic staff will invite the applicant to attend an interview even if the applicant fulfils all the above requirements.

Copy of MA degree certificate or confirmation that the MA degree will be awarded shortly or confirmation concerning the candidate’s position in a PhD course of an accredited university. Candidates that have not yet completed their MA course but are enrolled and are studying for such a course, may be accepted provided that they complete their studies by the 31st of July of the year that they will be enrolling for the PhD course, following the approval of the Postgraduate Committee.
