Overview

The Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work programme in Social Work offers courses leading to the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree. It combines humanities and general studies offerings with social work modules to prepare individuals for entry into direct human service professional positions. The programme is designed to prepare competent, professional, ethical social work generalists. Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) students learn to work collaboratively in a variety of settings and learn skills including engagement, assessment, intervention, and evaluation at various levels (CSWE Standards). Students will learn supplementary skills such as service planning, case management, problem solving, community outreach and organizing, advocacy, research and networking. The programme is designed to produce graduates who will work for the well-being of their clients, advocate for the development and implementation of appropriate and relevant social policies and contribute positively to the administration of organizations.

PROGRAMME LEARNING GOALS
This programme will:

  • Prepare students to use problem-solving skills to effect meaningful change in the conditions of individuals and groups in society.
  • Equip students with requisite knowledge and skills for the profession, including assessment, case management, resource and service planning, community outreach and organizing, and advocacy.
  • Engage students in conducting applied research and interventions that apply ethical principles in decision making and adherence to laws and regulations.
  • Facilitate students’ demonstration of effective interpersonal and technological skills in responding to client cases and needs.

 

PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOMES
Graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Social Work will be able to:

  • Apply knowledge of human behavior and environmental factors to work with organizations to address social and community issues and problems.
  • Use social work theories and methods to stimulate action and respond to the social circumstances of diverse individuals and groups who are disadvantaged.
  • Practice social justice tenets of equity, diversity, and inclusion in shaping policies and practices across a variety of social settings.
  • Apply legal and ethical principles, critical thinking, and effective communication in a caring and sensitive manner.

  • Passes in 5 GCE O Level passes at A, B or C including Mathematics and English or International Baccalaureate (IB) or other international qualification deemed equivalent (subject to UCC approval)
